Book commonly used two-color printing

Two-tone printed books are now commonplace, and we recently used this type of printing in one book. For this reason, related typesetting techniques were discussed with the typesetting company. At the same time also checked some two-color printing materials.

The common two-color printing that we have had in the early years is usually "black + red" or "black + blue". In simple terms, the two colors in the CMYK four-color printing are extracted. Because the recognition degree of yellow alone is unfavorable for reading, there is no "black + yellow" combination.

However, the colors printed in red and blue alone are dazzling, giving people a feeling that they are not on the grade. With the reduction in the cost of spot color printing, this type of processing is also introduced in two-color printing, and it is possible to use the spot color inks that are required by them to match the black color, so that the color becomes rich. The book we are currently working on is the use of "black + imitation gold" treatment. The layout and the cover are unified.

In fact, it is not correct to simply define two-color printing as "black + spot color". As long as it is a combination of two inks can be called two-color printing. This means we can use two spot colors. This is often used in many experimental image processing. It's almost like the "two-colored ice cream" that we all had when we were little kids, and two different flavors (colors) are mixed together, so there are all kinds of possibilities.

Of course, printing costs also need to be considered in printing. The cost of ink for spot color printing is more expensive than that of conventional CMYK inks, and PANTONE spot color inks are more expensive than printing inks of their own. Therefore, we need to combine the cost and the final result when designing, choose the appropriate method, and achieve the best possible result with limited cost.
